The Electric City Film Festival (Aug. 11 - 13)
The Electric City Film Festival, co-sponsored by Scranton Public Theater and WVIA, will take place Aug. 11, 12 and 13 at Hanlon's Grove in Nay Aug Park. The festival will kick off Friday, Aug. 11, with a screening of "The War Tapes," a critically acclaimed documentary produced by Northeastern Pennsylvania's own Robert May. The documentary is the first war movie filmed by the soldiers themselves. Named the winner of the Best Documentary Film at this year's Tribeca Film Festival, the film's screening will be followed a question and answer session with Mr. May. An opening night cocktail reception will take place beginning at 6:30 p.m. followed by "The War Tapes" screening at 8:15. Tickets for the party and film are $20; tickets for the film only are $10.
On Saturday, native Scrantonian Rebecca Marshall will headline the night with a showing of her latest documentary, "Al Franken: God Spoke" which offers an inside look at the life of the author and political satirist. In addition, a trailer for the yet-to-be-released documentary on Jason Miller will also premiere. Marshall will introduce the Franken film and will also follow-up with questions from the audience. Tickets for the film, which also starts at 8:15, are $10.
Sunday's Homegrown Movie Night will feature an evening of shorts produced by local filmmakers beginning at 6:30 p.m.. The night's films will be judged by the audience and that film which wins the Audience Award will premiere in the fall on WVIA-TV during a special presentation of "The Pennsylvania Experience" which airs Mondays at 7 p.m. The filmmakers will also be interviewed on the WVIA program.
CFP President Jeff Fowler's first DV project titled "The Race of the Saints" will play on Sunday. "The Race of the Saints" (18 minutes, 2002) is a student project that pays homage to a unique and puzzling ceremony that electrifies the otherwise quiet town of Jessup, PA.
