Filmmaker interviews on line
While listening an excellent interview with film editor Thelma Schoonmaker, who edited all of Martin Scorsese's films from Raging Bull to The Aviator, on NPR's Fresh Air interview program this week, I realized that with a majority of their shows from the last nine or so years available to listen to on line, that there is an incredible resource for those wanting to learn more about filmmaking from filmmakers and actors themselves. The show's host Terry Gross is a meticulous interviewer and since the discussions run anywhere between twenty to fifty minutes, you get much more information than the standard five minute, highly edited features you see or hear on other news magazine shows. The guests from the film business who have been featured on the show range from directors like David Lynch, Alfonso Cauron, Mel Brooks and Roger Corman to actors like Paul Giamatti and Peter Fonda and composers like John Barry. They've even done a serious look at Godzilla (1954)!
